Nigel was born, brought up and educated in the greater Belfast area and has lived in Holywood (Co Down) almost all of his life.
After school, he studied at Trinity College, Dublin (TCD), from where he graduated in 1971 with an honours degree in Business Studies (BBS).
After graduation, Nigel worked for a firm of chartered accountants before joining an engineering business in 1974. He became a Director of this company in 1976 and, later on, was appointed Managing Director of the group holding company. During more than two decades, he gained extensive experience of all aspects of the core business and also travelled extensively.
Regular overseas trips took him to many countries around the world, including countries in Asia, a region he has a special interest in within his work with Presbyterian Mission Overseas and where, since 1998, he has visited regularly on behalf of the Church.
After 23 years, and following radical changes in the business and its ownership, Nigel felt the need to move on.
In a most remarkable way, an unexpected chain of events occurred which culminated in his leaving the company just at the time when a new incumbant was being sought by the Overseas Board (as it was then known as; now the Board of Mission Overseas) for the post of Mission Education Officer.
Encouraged by his family and members of his home congregation, Nigel applied. He was surprised to be interviewed and even more surprised to be offered the job! Looking back, he readily acknowledges God's hand in all that happened at that time, of clear answers to prayer and the strong sense of call to full time work with the Church.
Nigel joined the Mission Overseas staff team in June 1997 and now has the title of Mission Overseas Development Officer.
He is married to Ann (a primary school teacher) and they have six adult children (4 girls and 2 boys). He is also an elder in High Street, Holywood Presbyterian Church
His interests include: DIY, Gardening, Cooking, Geocaching, Hillwalking, Photography & Sailing.
