Brian spent his early childhood in India, where his father served as a doctor in a Mission Hospital in Gujarat.
During this time, Brian was educated at Hebron School in Ootacamund in Tamil Nadu Province, South India.
In the early 1980’s he spent one year in the Spiritual Life Centre in Gujarat.
On his return to Ireland, he trained for the Presbyterian Ministry and, in 1985, was ordained as an Assistant Minister in Newtownbreda congregation.
A vacancy existed in a rural charge (a group of small Churches) in Jamaica and he was invited to take up this work by the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands (UCJCI) in 1986.
In 1987, he married Rev Elizabeth (Liz) Stevenson and they both ministered in the UCJCI's rural charge until 1990.
In 1991, the Hughes family, which now included daughters Sarah and Bethan, were re-located to Chapelton in Central Jamaica where Brian served as a tutor in the Institute for Theological and Leadership Development (ITLD), located in a large Secondary/High School. During this time he also taught Religious Education.
After eight years' servce in Jamaica (nine for Brian), the Hughes family returned to Ireland in 1995.
After completing an M.Phil in Ecumenics at the Irish School of Ecumenics and other appropriate courses, Brian took up the role of Chaplain in Belfast City Hospital where he is currently working.
Brian's wife, Liz, is currently minister in Whitehouse Presbyterian Church, where not surprisingly Brian is a member.
