The World Development Appeal (WDA) is launched in the autumn each year. Over the Advent and the Christmas season we aim to raise £500,000, or more, for development projects overseas, with funding channelled through the churches' own aid agencies, Christian Aid and Tearfund.
The current, 2011/12 Appeal, was launched on 18th October 2011, with the theme:
'Let Justice Flow : Thirsting for Justice'.It's hoped to use the slogan, 'Let Justice Flow', over several years, highlighting different aspects of the biblical call to do justice, and to link this theme, where possible, to the annual priorities set by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
WDA has been in existence since July 1980, and gives our church members the opportunity to respond to the needs of the poorest and most marginalised of the world's people. We work in long term partnership with the poor, changing lives and communities for the better.
In 2002, our General Assembly passed the following Resolution:
"That The General Assembly encourage the use of fairlytraded products within the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and advocate the use of fairly traded tea, coffee, and other products within Church House and also at Presbytery and congregational events."
Responsibility for planning, promoting and overseeing the World Development Appeal (WDA) lies with the World Development Committee (WDC), one of four committees of the Board of Mission Overseas (BMO) whose members are appointed each year by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
