Moderator visits Wycliffe's Belfast office

29th April 2010

On Tuesday 27th April, the Moderator, Dr Stafford Carson, made a visit to the Belfast offices of Wycliffe Bible Translators to meet the staff and find out more about Wycliffe’s work in Bible translation around the world.

The work of the Bible Translation in making the Scriptures available in a multitude of languages is strategic in aiding the spread of the Good News of Jesus Christ, as well as giving countless thousands the opportunity to own and read a Bible written in their mother tongue. Yet the remaining task is immense.

Commenting on his visit, Stafford says:

"What made my visit to Wycliffe Bible Translators so energising and interesting was the way the Wycliffe members understand the Bible as story. Their strap line is ‘The Bible: the Story everybody needs’, and they are enthusiastic about bringing that story to everyone. And Wycliffe have set themselves the audacious goal of preparing a Bible translation in every language that needs it by 2025." John Hamilton, a member of Saintfield Road Presbyterian Church, who is Wycliffe UK NI Coordinator and heads up Wycliffe’s Belfast office, had this to say about the Moderator’s visit:

"We shared Wycliffe’s passion that everybody should have mother tongue access to God’s Word; our contention that God showed the way through the translation of himself from divinity into humanity through his Son Jesus Christ; the opportunities that we offer to churches and individuals to contribute to Wycliffe's Vision; and our involvement with BibleFresh."

Why the visit? In June 2009 the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland recognised Wycliffe as one of a number of agencies doing what no one church or denomination can easily do, playing a vital role in the building of God’s Kingdom around the world.

Wycliffe Bible TranslatorsIn the light of this, we in Presbyterian Mission Overseas are continuing to explore opportunities to forge closer links with Wycliffe.

We commend the work of Wycliffe and would encourage our congregations to support them in any way they can.
