China Christian Council (CCC)

The China Christian Council (CCC) works closely together with the Three-Self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Churches in China (TSPM) to promote the life and witness of the Christian Church in China

Founded in 1980, CCC aims to be the umbrella organisation for all Protestant Christian churches in China and as such seeks to:

  • Unite Chinese Christians around their belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

  • Provide for theological education and for publication of the Bible, hymn books and other religious literature.

  • Encourage the exchange of information among local churches in evangelism, pastoral work and administration.

CCC has also formulated a church order for local churches, and seeks to continue to develop friendly relations with churches overseas. Together, the CCC and the TSPM are known as the "two national Christian bodies". The Amity Foundation's News Service regularly carries CCC's news and views.

The Protestant and Catholic communities remain largely isolated from one another. Though they respect each others rights as religious believers, except for cooperation in proffering suggestions to the government about religious policy to further respect for and protection of the rights of all religious believers, they have little or no regular contact with one another.

Questions about the Church in China today

Many in the West are anxious to know more about the Church in China today, and if Chinese Christians are free to practise and share their faith. Reports vary. Some suggest total freedom with no State interference; whilst others speak of repression, persecution and a Church forced to go 'underground' to survive.

What's not in doubt is the huge growth in the Church, and with this has come a great demand for Bibles all across China. Many Bibles continue to be smuggled in from outside to meet this need, though opinions differ on whether this is wise and helpful in the long run. Yet it should also be noted that in 2009 the Amity Press, located within the country, expects to print 18 million Bibles, which will be distributed throughout China.

See Amity's News Service for FAQs on the Church in China.
