National Bible Society in Ireland (NBSI)

National Bible Society in Ireland (NBSI) works with churches and individuals, providing Bible resources, simple guides, Scripture studies, help and expertise. NBSI wants everyone in Ireland, and throughout the world, to know and understand the Word of God.

NBSI supplies Bibles, Testaments and Gospels in books, audio and in electronic form to bookshops, schools, churches and individuals all over the country. All these are supplied from the Society’s bookshop, Bestseller, located [Google map] in Dawson Street, Dublin which also sells a full range of Christian books, pastoral and spiritual - academic and liturgical - as well as the widest range of Bibles in Ireland, including Scriptures in many languages.

President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, copying verses 2 to 5 from chapter 1 of the Gospel of JohnIn addition, NBSI raises money in Ireland to fund translation, production and distribution of God’s Word in other countries. There are over 6,500 languages in the world but in nearly three-quarters of these languages there is no Bible translation. NBSI believes that every one should have easy access to the Holy Scriptures in their own heart language.

Along with Bible Societies around the world, which exists to bring the Word of God to all people in a language they understand in an appropriate form and at a price each one can afford, NBSI sees that its task is to bring the Scriptures to all people everywhere.

The United Bible Societies (UBS) is a fellowship of 145 national Bible Societies working to place God's Word in the hearts and minds of the people they serve across 200 countries and territories.

Three elements are key to UBS' work:

Translation
Translation is at the heart of United Bible Societies' work. There are an estimated 6,900 languages in the world; the complete Bible is available in just 471. See UBS Scripture Language Report 2008 for further information.

Distribution
Bible Societies worldwide make Scriptures available through direct sales, subsidised and free distribution programmes in schools, prisons, hospitals etc. Each year the UBS provide details of the numbers distributed.

Programmes
Programmes include literacy initiatives, projects supporting women suffering from domestic violence, storytelling, training courses, HIV/AIDS programmes, and Braille Scriptures. NBSI supports over 30 different projects each year.

The work of the Bible Societies in making the Scriptures available in a multitude of languages, and in distributing them all over the world, is strategic in aiding the spread of the Good News of Jesus Christ, as well as giving countless thousands the opportunity to own and read a Bible written in their mother tongue.

Together with agencies involved in Bible Translation and in Christian Broadcasting, the Bible Societies play a vital role in supporting the life and witness of the worldwide Church. These Special Service Agencies, or SSA's, are doing what no one church or denomination can easily do, playing a vital role in the building of God's Kingdom around the world.

Recognising the importance of the Bible Societies, Bible translators and other SSA's, in Presbyterian Mission Overseas we continue to explore ways of forging closer links with, and supporting the work of, both the National Bible Society in Ireland (NBSI) and the Bible Society in Northern Ireland (BSNI), based in Belfast; as well as with Wycliffe Bible Translators through their Belfast office.

To this end, we commend the work of these two Bible Societies and Wycliffe, and would encourage our congregations to support them in any way they can.
