Nagyberegi Református Líceum(NBRL) is the Reformed Church secondary school in the village of Nagybereg (Berehi) , which is located in Transcarpathia in southwestern Ukraine, some 8km from the town of Beregszász (Berehovo) and close to Ukraine's borders with Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.
Around 2,500 people live in Nagybereg, the majority of whom are ethnic Hungarians (79%). Of the remainder, 12% are Ukrainian and the rest Roma (Gypsy). In Transcarpathia as a whole, which has a population of 1.25 million, ethnic Hungarians account for 12% of those living in the region.
There are two educational institutions in Nagybereg: the state secondary school and NBRL, which was established in 1993 by the Transcarpathian Reformed Church (TRC) as a 'faith-based' school.
TRC is an ethnic, Hungarian-speaking church, linked with the Reformed Church in Hungary (HRC), and includes the HRC congregations that exist in Transcarpathia.
The education offered by NBRL is delivered in Hungarian, while the close links that exist between NBRL and the Church are maintained through the headmaster, who is also the pastor of the local TRC congregation.
Part of the current church building dates back to 1237 but the village of Nagybereg didn't become Protestant until 1554. Today, most of its inhabitants belong to the local Reformed congregation.
Jenni Wolfe, a member of First Islandmagee, arrived in Nagybereg in August 2009 to commence a year of voluntary service at NBRL, where her primary task is teaching English.
