Life-Skills Training & Outreach

Naomi Keefe lives in Recife in Northeast Brazil, where she works with the Christian Centre of Help to the Family, a joint outreach initiative of the Casa Caiada congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPB), and a local Anglican church.
The project proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ as the only Saviour and Lord, and seeks to share His love in practical action amongst people who used to live on, and seek to eek out a living from, the city’s rubbish tip which was recently closed in January 2011.
Naomi has worked alongside Casa Caiada congregation and local churches within the neighbourhood since April 2005, seeking to help these poor and most marginalised of people by sharing the Good News of Jesus with them. Naomi is responsible for the planning and preparation of suitable devotional Bible material for use within the Project amongst the children, young people and their families and in the training of the volunteers. She is also responsible for co-ordinating a teenager programe which facilitates and encourages the development of professional skills of the young people together with weekly Bible studies.
The opportunities are great but so are the challenges; building relationships and breaking down ‘hardened attitudes’ takes time; safety for the team is also a concern. So your prayers are valued greatly.
The daily activities of the project include pre-school with 80 children aged 2-5 years, a homework club with 120 children (6-12 years), a teenager programme and maintaining contact with over 100 families linked with the project. The project is also in the process of developing its health assistance to these families.
Before taking up her current assignment, Naomi spent two years (2000-02) as a volunteer in mission in the Vale of the Lord Orphanage in Recife. On returning home, she began a two-year period of study at Union Theological College (UTC) in Belfast, gaining a Masters degree. Her current service in Brazil began in 2004.
