Theological Education

Matt Williams was brought up in a Christian family, though his road to becoming an assured Christian has not been a smooth one. Now, by grace, he considers himself first and foremost a disciple of Jesus Christ and his chief aspiration in life is to help others to be so too.
Seeing theological education as a central aspect of this, Matt was invited by the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia, to serve as a lecturer in Livingstonia Theological College (LTC) in Ekwendeni, where PCI missionary Robin Quinn is the Vice-Principal.
The college is one of five that constitute the University of Livingstonia, three of which are at Ekwendeni. There are around 35 students there, all training for ministry within the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian.
Matt, who initially planned to stay for one academic year, has elected to serve for another year. His remit is theological rather than the practical aspect of ministerial training. This is focused on teaching Biblical Studies and Biblical Languages at Diploma or Bachelor level, though it may include other subjects as necessitated by circumstance. Matt will also has some responsibility for extra-curricular life around the college in such areas as pastoral care and worship and seeks to be an active member of a local CCAP congregation.
Matt is particularly concerned about the Bible being understood in real depth and that academic progress is not divorced from spiritual growth. At the same time, there are significant challenges to be met at the level of communication. This is due both to the fact that English is (at least) the second language of the students and that cultural formation in this part of Africa has not had a predominantly literary basis. Thus, in the course of his work in Malawi, Matt is seeking to grapple with the overarching question of the function and method of theological education in the mission of God.
