Day 4 – SPAIN

Prayer Points –

  • Give thanks for the opportunities Derek and Jane have had to share with others about the work of GBU in Spain.

  • Remember them as they settle back into work with GBU.

Day 8 – UKRAINE

Jenni Wolfe, who has been teaching English in Nagyberegi Református Líceum (NBRL), a Hungarian Reformed Church school in Nagybereg in Transcarpathia, sends the following prayer requests:-

Prayer Points –

  • For the third year students at the school as they prepare to leave school and undertake difficult exams.

  • For spiritual welfare of Jenni and the staff at the school.

  • For the community outreach with the Roma community.

  • Give thanks to God for all the powerful work He is doing in Ukraine.

  • Give thanks to God for the connections He is giving Jenni in Ukraine and the USA.

Days 12 to 14 – KENYA

The first Christian wedding to take place in Tuum is to be held this Saturday, (10th). There is a little cultural opposition to the fact that no bull will be killed.

Prayer Points –

  • That the wedding will go well and be a good opportunity for Christian witness.

  • For preparations for the April youth camps which are due to start on 20th April. Preparations have been hindered as communications have been down, but is still hoped to have camps which will include a team who will challenge the practise of female circumcision.

Day 25 – THAILAND

Thousands of people continue their protest in Bangkok against the Thai government, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and calling for new and fair elections to be held. Earlier today, the protestors, known as the ‘red-shirts’, marched on Thailand’s parliament whilst it was in session. A small group of the protesters managed to breach the security cordon and entered the grounds of the parliament, then later retreating. MPs, who were inside at the time, abandoned their session and evacuated the building.

This current round of protests, which started almost a month ago on 12th March, shows no sign of ending, and last week’s talks between the two sides ended with no agreement. So far, the protests have been peaceful and the government has not used force. However, there are fears that the uneasy peace may not last with tension between the two sides remaining high.

The ‘red shirts’ are made up of mainly people from rural areas along with the urban poor. Many support the former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a bloodless military coup in 2006 following weeks of protests by the ‘yellow-shirts’ (mostly urban middle-classes). The current Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, who issupported by the ‘yellow-shirts’, came to power over a year ago allegedly without a popular mandate in his favour.

Prayer Points –

  • That people will remain calm and that a peaceful and just solution will be found to the present conflict.

  • For long term reconciliation, that Thailand will once again will be united for the common good.

Overseas Teams Training (OTT)

This day of training seminars aims to give helpful guidance and practical advice on a number of highly relevant issues. Whilst the programme is still to be finalised, it is likely to include such topics as Team Health; Health and Safety (for those involved in practical work); Child Protection in a Cross-Cultural Setting; and Personal Security Overseas. Debriefing for Senders

For team leaders and those sending teams overseas to train them on the how to provide effective debriefing to those returning from short-term mission assignments overseas. Debriefing is an important tool that aims to help such people work through the impact of their feelings and emotions, helping them to benefit from their overseas experiences as they settle back into the routines of ‘normal life’ at home. The workshop will be held on Saturday 15th May in Banbridge Road, Dromore Presbyterian Church. Closing date for bookings is Thursday 13th May 2010.
