Day 24 – NEPAL

Grenville Hopkinson will return to Kathmandu this week after two weeks of planning with the UMN staff teams in Rukum and Mugu. Grenville has been coordinating planning for all seven UMN teams which forms the application UMN will make to the Nepal Government's Social Welfare Council for a further five-year agreement to work in Nepal, and for the necessary visas for the expatriate staff.

Last week Janet Campbell returned from organising a spiritual retreat for Tansen Hospital staff, and on Sunday last (13th), held a retreat for expatriate staff from UMN and International Nepal Fellowship (INF)working in Kathmandu.  Both events were well attended and valuable in supporting people to have an extended time with God.

Joe Campbell spent most of last week working in Pokhara to the west of Kathmandu with senior INF staff, who are seeking to discern how INF can contribute to peace efforts in the country.

The on-going political talks in Nepalremain in stalemate.  The political parties are unable to agree on who will lead and form the new government.  Sadly this lack of political agreement affects a number of other development decisions and implementation in needy parts of the country.

  • Give thanks for the work Grenville has been able to do in the past few weeks.  Pray for his safe travel back to Kathmandu this week. Pray also that UMN’s discussions with the Social Welfare Council will go well and that a new five-year agreement will be reached at the end of the summer.

  • Give thanks for the recent retreats in Tansen and Kathmandu and pray for the spiritual protection and development of staff in UMN. Most are linked into a small group that meets each week, as well as weekly church attendance.

  • Give thanks for the work of INF in different parts of the country, especially the important medical camps which bring specialist medical care to remote regions. Pray for wisdom for those tasked with considering peace work in and through INF’s development programmes.

  • Continue to pray for political leaders, some of whom visited Dublin and Belfast last year, that they will reach agreement soon and that important development work will not be further delayed.
